A lot will depend on your ride height. But you can run 8" wide rims with the correct offset/back space, super low you'll be better off with 7".
Then tyre size comes into play.

Makes no difference how many pieces it is made of. Offset/Backspace is the limitation. You can only go as wide the suspension components and guard lip allows. People's idea on wide varies greatly, how wide do you want to go?
Back in the day we would run a 245/50R14 (23.6" Tall) tyre which is technically a 9.6" wide tyre (these can be used on a 7" to 9.5" rim) but you will run into tyre rub if it's lowered.
I personally would not go for super wide front wheel/tyre combination. Heavy steering, tyre rub and undue wear on bearing and steering components. I'm running 8.4" tyre 215/60R15 (25.2" Tall) on a 15x7 rim and super low springs.
I'm talking section width here not tread width. This is where the whole width of the tyre is in the measurement including the sidewall bulge.

Getting the balance right is the hard part with handling, looks and stance being a consideration. People get it all wrong a lot of the time (IMHO).
