HZ Van Project

Hi Everyone

I thought I had better post some pics of my project.
I picked this up in December 2017.
I believe a roadworthy was attempted in 2006.
It failed, went into the shed & waited for me.

I've done quite a bit to it since getting it home.
I will post some updates later.

Out of the factory she was a plain old HZ Holden Van.
October 1978 on the ID tag.
Not Sandman, not even Kingswood.
202 with 3 on the tree.
In that daggy commercial tan beige colour.
I have heard that that colour may have been SEC, PMG, Board of Works, Telecom or Gas & Fuel.????
Don't know who to believe but I have a theory that Holden just had a Commercial Fleet colour that they gave to these big utilities.

It has been got at a bit over the years.
It now has a 1972 (HQ) 253 with a Trimatic.
That's the way i will keep it I think.
The Cragar's will stay but most likely get some paint as they are rusty.
I've put GTS flutes in the guards & will paint HX Aquarius.
Not planning any Sandman stripes.
It had Commodore buckets but they are now gone & an original bench will go in.

Just wanted to share my progress & utilise this valuable resource as I am going to have lots of questions for the experts down the track.

I'll keep posting updates of what I've done up till now.
It's been a couple of years since I got it but I'd like to document & share the process.

The original colour I think is called Kiewa Grey.
Code 568-0105
A Commercial Fleet Colour
You can see it as the bottom layer here.

Then it has had a coat of blue, in some cheap paint which turns to paste whenever i hit it with the wire wheel.
It all needs to come off. Probably using a heat gun as it just clogs everything else.
And finally a top coat of Matt Black from spray cans. (Any tips for removing crap paint welcomed)

Also some peanut thought it would be a great idea to fill the Rain Gutters with bog.
I disagree so the first task is to remove it.

Then got it settled into it's new home.

Paint stripper and cling wrap to get old paint off
messy but effective

There is no easy way of getting multi layers of paint and bog off the body, any many different techniques. As gene has said paint stripper then put cling wrap over it so stop the stripping agents from quickly evaporating off to quickly helps give it a bit more zing. Very messy and you will still have to spend many hours sanding the panels after paint stripping.

A course paint stripping disc on a 4" or 5" hand held angle grinder gets it off reasonably quick if you don't mind the dust everywhere. Make sure you use a mask because you don't know what nasty paint could be on there. TIP, if using a stripping disc keep moving the disc around and don't concentrate in one position as heat build up can cause warping of the metal panels if you let it get to hot.

By Stripping Disc do you mean those resin type discs that look like a sponge, only much harder than a sponge..?
