New air filter cover.

Just removing the older air cleaner box.
Installing a Crome round open one.
What do I do with the hose that comes from the tappit cover and goes into the filter cover.
Can I just put a rubber bung on it to block it off?
Any benefits or hazards to the engine for doing this?

It's for venting the motor, so needs at the least to be open with a small filter on the end of the hose, but for legality (if that matters to you) I would drill and screw on a male hose outlet on the base of the new chrome one and connect the hose there

Would it matter if it was filtered?
We don’t have those legal problems here in New Zealand.
Because there is a hole in the base of the new plate but on the inside of the filter.
So it would be vented directly into the carby not through the new filter.

It's just for oil fumes to be vented and recycled, then spat out the exhaust. Typically aftermarket sports air cleaners come with the multi-stepped hose adapter that is to be fitted to the air cleaner base.
Connect the hose and off you go.

That said, the original air would be retained if it was me. Keeping the Sandman original is important for resale.
At the very least keep the original air cleaner with the car.

Looks odd but would have to let more air in..

Mine is upside down. The Buick Century I had in Canada had the same style air cleaner so I turned it over as well.
It really just lets hot air in though.

Just check that the base plate doesn’t flex. Some of those after market air filters are rubbish and flex and don’t seal around the carby, letting dirt straight in.

I used to have a filter fitted to tappet cover but then I bought the kit from Kingswood Country.

Have a round chrome filter.

I think it looks ok.

Still have the original air cleaner filter set up.
