    Smile front guards

    Hello I am new here

looking around at different Sand Mans I am wondering why some have the Monaro style fluted front guards and others don't?
Was it a tick box optional extra so some cars have it and some don't?

thank you and nice to be here

HQ and HJ Sandman had GTS Fluted Guards from factory.
HX and HZ never had them on a factory Sandman but many replaced them.

thank you for that, so you couldn't even get them as an optional extra on HX and HZ?

Yes I guess people would just settle for what was on offer at the time. . But I'm thinking you could have done a special order one maybe .

Anything maybe possible but unlikely. This would need a SPO to be approved and unless you have the SPO paper as proof, you prove nothing!
Ordering from a Holden Dealership and having the Sandman delivered with fluted guards is also a possibility and a more likely scenario. But this would be the Dealership's doing not Holden.
Most likely is that the guards were done after the new car sale at some time.

Innuendo is spot on. It was very common in those days for dealers to offer GTS & dual headlight Premier style fronts to the purchaser.

But these were done by the dealership, either in their own panel shop or sub-contracted to a nearby business. You couldn't order GTS guards or a Premier front from the factory.

When the cars were originally produced were the flutes welded in or did they come pressed in? (in a HQ)

Guards were factory stamped with flutes originally

    Yes, always factory stamped/pressed in.
But not all pressed in versions are original. There was a guy who moved bush sometime later in Penrith, NSW who was pressing flutes into standard guards.
All weld in flutes are either aftermarket or cut from damaged originals guards.
