GTS is 390mm so there’s your problem with not being able to see the gauges.

I've got what l believe to be [recovered] HX buckets and l find the distance between my legs and the bottom of the steering wheel to be minimal and l'm only 5'10"

I've just read the whole thread and my WB van has HJ/X/Z buckets in it now. They were retrimmed and are pretty firm. I'm a tad more than 5' 10" tall and apart from the leg clearance issue getting in (I have big legs) there is no issue with seeing gauges with a GTS steering wheel.
The issue you have is pretty obviously the diameter of your steering wheel.
Back in the day we all put smaller wheels on to help the leg clearance issue and just dealt with the gauges by looking around the wheel, so you need to decide if you want to do that or get a bigger wheel.

you may well be correct.

The wheel was on it when I bought the car.
I have now purchased a GTS wheel and will see how that works out for me.
