Which is derived from NASCO and that is where the "N" comes from. Holden changed it's parts division name from National Automotive Service Company to General Motors Parts & Accessories around 1972 (Mid HQ). It no longer has its original identity so it’s not technically even a Sandman anymore. The chassis number is the cars identity.
This old chestnut has come up a lot on here.
It’s possible it was stolen and recovered as well. The original number may have been tampered with. Are you absolutely certain it’s no longer there? I have heard of some chassis with the original number still there and the police number as well.
New South Wales police numbers both engine and chassis typically start with "N" and end the number with "P".

I thought chassis were issued blank with no number?
I have no idea if the N stood for Nasco. Seems a long shot but it’s possible.
Most the time the chassis were not stamped but are still issued with a NASCO number.
Bodies were supplied with NASCO stamped on a new compliance plate but were typically swapped for the original.
100% the "N" prefix stands for NASCO. This is a very well known fact.

Your correct. Memories are very unreliable, I could have sworn that tag had GMP&A on it. NASCO it is though.

I've never seen the nasco compliance plates until you put that one up ...and never seen the nr on the engine number till the one I have in my hz .....
You can see why "if" you had the original body tag you would swap it over when your new body arrived.
Missing all the other details and confusing to authorities.
The chassis in question could be a NASCO replacement. What with the number on the passenger side and the number starting NREP.
This would leave room back on the drivers side for the original chassis number to be re-stamped and the opposite proving a replacement.
All possible. Still hurts it's resale value as a Sandman though unless you have all the paper work as proof and even then...

Yes it definitely would be not as desirable if the chassis did match the compliance plates .. but how bout the motor beginning with nr instead of qr ....
