Thread: What temperature?

    What temperature?

    Again a water related question
    Normally my gauge sits at a quarter to half way on the temperature gauge.
    When idling for about 15 minuets after a hot run it can go up to 3 quarters.
    About halfway it is sitting at 93deg and at 3 quarters it is just over 100deg.
    And remember that is when it is idling after a long hot run(hot day)
    I have checked this with a digital thermometer.
    Running a 88deg thermostat.
    And I have converted my system to a recovery one,including changing the radiator cap
    Does this seem okay to everyone.
    Have tried to find information but I think my best bet is experience.

    Hmm, i wouldn't be happy with over 100 degrees when idling. I have an 82 deg thermostat (180degF) which works well for me. Do you have a shroud around your radiator?

    Seems too hot to me. It shouldn’t get to 100. Try a cooler thermostat and make sure you have a shroud as mentioned.

    Is the digital thermometer measuring the coolant temp or the temp of the air being blown through the core?

    No shroud as told non aircon didn’t need one.
    Thermostat cover is what I used the laser pointer at.
    Normally the girl runs at about 94deg.
    Thought it was a 15lb cap but will check.

    It shouldn’t get that hot. Either the rad is blocked up, water pump isn’t doing the job, thermostat is wrong/not working or you need a shroud. If it’s hitting 100, if you didn’t have coolant it would be boiling it’s head off.

    If he has a good working cooling system with a 13lb cap it will not boil until it reaches over 109c.

    As suggested I would run an 80-82 thermostat for starters, but some of your radiator tubes could be partially blocked. I have found that if 10% of the tubes are blocked on a hot day they generally start to run a bit hotter than normal. I wouldn't have a car without a good fan and shroud. Although what part of NZ are you from , you probably wouldn't even need a radiator if your deep down south.

    True, Axistr, the cap will lift boiling point too. The reason I say 100 is too hot, you can run a tractor at full load all day in the summer, with a capillary tube temp gauge, if the cooling system is correct, it will not go over about 92. 100 is way too hot. There is a problem either with your remote gauge or the cooling system.

    Cheers guys will start with the thermostat and water pump as she is the original.
    Top of the radiator was hot and the bottom was about 60deg so maybe the water is not getting moved fast enough.
