They just get bigger and bigger! That's a baby to some of the engines they use in the real big dump trucks. The Cat 793's I drove at Cadia had 85 litre (and that's the second biggest Cat dump truck!) V16 making over 2000hp. Just made me cringe filling one up for fuel the first time. 4000litres for one 12 hour shift pulling out of the pit(half an hour to get to the top) they burnt 350 litres an hour (that was the fuel usage on the Vims computer in the cab).
The biggest engine I had driven was in my Kenworth before I started there, 14 litre Cummins rated at 230hp. The pit dewatering pumps used 500hp Cat C16(I think) motors. 5 worked in stages to lift the water all the way to the top.
You loose touch with reality in mining. It all just looks normal and when you see councils using Cat 12 graders and D7 dozers pushing gravel pits they seem like dinky little toys.

I can't believe it's hard to find decent machine shops. It's going to be impossible in ten years time.

Its amazing that Cummins started with the NT 250hp then the NTC went from 230-450hp basically same engine same bore and stroke just added piston cooling, more fuel & cam timing. Made the old 230 a very durable engine. I liked and miss the old green and silver meanies 8V92s. I drove a 4870 series Atkinson for a while it was like riding my motorcross bike all day.

My Kenworth (K144) was originally a 8V92. It was long gone when I bought it, replaced with the 230. I would love to have juiced it up a bit though. Another 200hp would have been good! I think just a fuel pump change if it had the crank dippers?

Finally the panno has a hart beat again. Its good to hear it run again. Started first pop. Checked all the compressions 150psi on all cylinders and no oil leaks. I did however have one hiccup, I removed all the spark plugs and wound it over to get oil pressure first, the needle & seat stuck and flooded the carby and manifold before I noticed it. It even filled the secondary's and fuel run through the butterfly shafts. I am glad I disconnected the coil wire so there wasn't any spark. Forgot how tedious the old quadrojets are to pull apart. Anyway got there in the end. One more small step forward.

Still chipping away at it. Stripped all the front panels epoxy primed and painted the inner guards and radiator support. Fitted a brand new copper/brass radiator and connected the cooling system. Now that I can run the engine for extended periods I gave it a decent tune. The engine is going great but wasn't overly happy with the quad gauges, the needles were reading low and fluctuating a bit. I removed the gauge panel and checked the 5 volt regulator not so good. Picked up a new adjustable electronic regulator from Jcar. cut the old reg from the panel and connected the new reg inline. I set 5.1 volts on the new reg before connecting it to the gauges, then connected my resistance wheel on each gauge circuit with various resistances from 10-70 ohms. All the gauges aligned perfectly with the gauge face markers. Gauges are now reading perfectly are quicker to react with nice and steady needles. The new regulator only cost me $7.95c bloody bargan.

Back to panel repairs, only had rust in one guard. I had to file finish the other guard still not 100% happy so next its time to hit it with hifill and block it. I sanded the bonnet back to bare metal and was almost perfect only had five hale dents but all the body lines were nice and straight so it was a breeze the fix.

Nice progress. I like the Jaycar electronics repair to get the gauges good again.

Yes it's a toss up between Jcar or BCF which one is my favourite shop. Spend hours in both.

So you're running with the HZ front then?
