Bugger the Panno is still having a sleep over at the panel shop. All the removable panels have now been painted and the body is ready to go in the booth early next year. They tried to get it finished before Christmas but it didn't happen. I told them I would prefer it to be right rather than rush it. My son took photos of the panels yesterday, when I looked at the upper tailgate I had to take a second look. It looked like they hadn't painted it all but its only the reflection. Had me worried and had to ring him to confirm. Lots of shine straight out of the gun.

Got a call from the painter today saying the pano is going in the booth this week (woo hoo) and wanted to confirm the Sandman blackouts. Can any experts on here confirm where the factory Sandman black out finished in relation to body lines. I have seen so many different variations I'm not sure now what was the original masking lines. I have also decided to go a Saturn black (tuxedo black), again not 100% sure what the factory was but gloss blackouts look a bit in your face when alongside a nice super gloss finish body colour.

I believe this Ute is original and regarded as a reliable reference point. Not going to help with your top tailgate however

While this is a reasonable reference car it is not the be all and end all that people make out. It has been repaired (quite poorly) when hit up the arse looking at the photos. The spoiler is a fibreglass replacement. The centre console also appears to be painted. Not sure I would be too happy if that was my car in the museum having somebody crawling in and out taking photos either! But that's really relevant to you.

Also it should be pointed out that the blackouts varied from plant to plant. So one original will not necessarily be the same as another that is just as original.

Thanks guys, wow the ute has the mask lines all over the place. We forget how rough they left the factory back in the day. Defently wouldn't be acceptable these days. Anyway as said its a guide, with variations between different Holden production lines. Its hard to judge if the blackouts were gloss or just badly faded, the blue looks very faded also.

The colour is Opaline Blue which is a very washed out baby blue. I quite like the colour but many don't.
There is obvious sand marks in the rear quarter and massive paint runs near the taillight, and paint blow-in's very obvious around the rear drivers bumperette/beaver panel so I wouldn't think that factory.
The masking is rough as guts. Who knows the real history of that Ute but I'm sure it's not as honest as the label "Original - Unrestored" suggests!

I'm sure there are close up blackout pictures of Rodney's Van that he posted in a thread I just can't seem to find it. Maybe scrolling through their Photobucket account will find them?
As for the masking, the car itself has nice contour lines you can follow that will yield a superior results especially around the door/B Pillar area.

Looks like all the time and effort spent on the body has payed off. Photos don't do it justice as it actually looks better in the flesh even though its a bit dusty. The painter was very happy with the outcome. The paint hasn't been touched, straight out of the gun. I am very impressed with the result. I have to fit the front guards and doors so we can do the blackouts next.
