In the 70s and 80s I didn't like the factory stripes or any stickers for that matter on my cars. Now my thoughts have gone 180. I think there is so much area on Sandman's that they need a little something to break up such big painted panels and the hockey stick stripes look cool and suit the Sandman's. Not sure if I will go the whole hog and get the tailgate sticker. Probably also go with the small Sandman front guard stickers for the HZ Sandy look.

Every time I go out to the shed and look at the three samples and think maybe the Impulse blue might be a fraction too dark, then the next time it looks much lighter. When it get light reflections it almost look like Deauville blue and other times you would swear it Windsor blue. Impulse blue looks so rich when you look at the sample straight on and with the purl it has so much more variation with reflections it just jumps out at you. My daughter come around today so I quickly showed her the samples and she picked Windsor blue, my son wants it Impulse blue but he is biased because of his Impulse blue clubby. And the wife is now leaning towards the Impulse or Deauville but likes Windsor. I think I have started an argument at home. Bugger I might have to go and consult my mum Or I could say stuff you all and paint it nipple pink.

Clearly this is causing you and your family some angst, paint it deauville blue, finish it off and I'll take it off your hands

This is 11 year old factory deauville, first six were in Melbourne then 5 in Darwin where the sun and heat chewed out the metallic

My son turned up last weekend to help me lower the level of my bourbon collection. Before we downed to many I got him to run his trained hands over the panno. He is super fussy which is a good thing, and put blue tape on any places he wasn't happy with. He ended up with 9 pieces of tape on it. So not to bad and happy with that, it was like doing your drivers licence test. The weather over the past two days has been good and got into the low twenties perfect for painting and managed to get a few coats of Hi-fill on and re blocked.

Very nice work axistr. Seeing that you got the tick of approval from the son, i hope you then aggressively attacked the Bourbon collection...

Got a chance to do the final rub down on the panno today. The weather is worming up so she is finally ready for colour. I have decided to sent it to the smash repair shop that my son works for and put it into their spray booth and spray it there. I was going to spray the it in the shed but in reality there is just to much dust floating around. My neighbour has heaps of top soil piled around his property for the past three years and every time we think he is finished he bring home more and tips the soil next to my fence and 10 meters from my shed. So I am going to play it safe and use a cleaner environment.

One small step forward, got some colour on a couple of panels today. I went for quality paint for the colour and clear. My son who also works at this panel shop as a panel beater insisted they only use PPG paints. My son worked at this shop previously and during his two year absence and a change in ownership, the new owners went to a cheaper paint system and supplier.

PPG have a new clear coat paint system and only available to the trade from last month. apparently its not even listed on their web sit yet. The downside, the clear paint is three times the price of the one they currently use. When the painter sprayed out the clear coat he couldn't believe the ease and quality of the finish, commenting that it wouldn't need any cut or polishing. The paint sat so flat there isn't and orange peel at all and was good to go straight out of the gun. (see picture) He was so impressed he dragged my son and the boss over to check out this new paint. He is now insisting that the boss start using this paint and reckons it will save many valuable hours during the paint process and a much better end result. My son also commented the painter was only an average painter and good results are achievable with average skills.

Anyway I will have to wait till the whole car is in colour to be a true believer. I thought they would have painted all the panels and body at the same time, but the painter said no, there was just to much area to keep wet at one time and not enough area in the booth. He believes there will be no variations between the painting periods. We decided to do the blackouts when the panels are all on and use a Saturn black paint as per factory Sandman process
