    Supra gearbox or M21??

Gday All, tossing up whether to put a 5 Speed Toyota Supra box behind my 308 or keep it original and stick with the M21. Just wondering if anyone has had any good or bad experiences with this combo. Would like to keep it original but the M21 tend to break easier than the Tojo boxes. Cheers.

great post, im joining in as im also after this kind of feedback too.

I've got a slightly worked 5l and the aussie 4 speed box (M21) just doesnt cut it, especially on the highway. (running 3.08 rears)

i found the following page useful for ratios in the different toyo boxes:
    http://holdenpaedia.oldholden.com/To...ed_gear_ratios

my understanding is that a 'supra' 5 speed could be any of the 'w' series toyota boxes. all in all ya do get an overdrive gear, but the first gear in the toyo boxes would be ridiculous for a v8 from what i can see.

    cheers all

Your other options are to rebuild the M21 as an M20 or M22 in combination with a 2.78 or 2.6 diff change. It does the same thing as fitting a 5spd (ie ratio spread) but has 4 gears instead of 5. It will probably be cheaper and leaves your van 100% original (bar the gears in the box and diff). The M22 ends up with a 1st just like 1st in the Supra box, and 4th ends up where 5th is (ratio wise). The M20 gives you a 1st just like you have with an M21 and a 3.08 diff, but 4th ends up as per a Supra in 5th with a 3.08 diff.

Have a supra 5 speed in ours, which I was going to change back to an M20 but after spending time driving it with the 5 speed no way. It is great to drive. Very smooth changes and great to have 5th gear for hiway driving to keep the revs down.

for the non anal/non correct restorer i would say go to the supra box..they will take more abuse than any of the aussie 4 speed boxes and are cheaper to buy as a box alone after you have done the conversion..just not on initial outlay..:geegee:

    It's to much for me.
I'd pay $200 for it (Remember Greg, i'm stuck in the 70's with prices).
