Are these tags a genuine sandman?

    image.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpeg

I am looking at purchasing a 1974 HJ panelvan and would like to confirm it is a genuine sandman before I go have a look.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am a little concerned about the GVM being 2200 as I read it should be less than 2000 for a genuine.

    Many thanks
    Cara

    Hi Cara,

That car is pre-75 which means it is closer to a HQ than later HJ's when the GVM was de-rated on the compliance plates. 1/75 introduced a raft of changes to bring commercials into line with other vehicles and some of those are little things like the addition of retractable seatbelts.

Because it is a Panel van then the body has some distinctive tell-tale signs. HJ Sandman panel vans were the first to introduce the full roof lining all the way to the rear tailgate. There was also no corresponding Kingswood Panelvan model in a HJ making a Sandman the only body to get this system. There should be a distinctive roof lining mounting system.

This mounting system and toothed rail at the rear door is distinctly different from later HX and HZ Sandman and Kingswood panelvans bodies. Indications of that should be a good guide.

    Thanks Mauser!

Sounds like I'll have to wait to check it out in person!

2000kg is only for late XX7 HZ Sandman Vans.
1950kg was the normal for all other V8 XX7s after the 76 build year.

    xu3 was always 2200kg.

if this van checks out to be a sandman it will be known as an XX7 sandman. As its before the derated GVM/GVW.

I've just realised that the body number and VIN don't match. Does this matter?

The body number is 133445, the vin thinks it should be 292928.

At that time Adelaide body number and vin didn't match. Other plants did.
