Can I find a car if I only have the body identification plate?

    Hi!

I am trying to locate a car that was sold a few years ago and it was suggested that I use a VIN search.

Unfortunately the car is a 1974 HJ Panelvan and I only have the body identification plate.

Can anyone help? I have tried to work out what the VIN would be, but I would be missing the serial number.

I would greatly appreciate any advice!

You'd have to be really really lucky. Most rego authorities use the Chassis number as identifiers on these cars and not many people would put the body number in a for sale ad. I assume you've googled it already?

What's the Body No.? Long shot but I may have it recorded, also if it's a Sydney or Brisbane van the Body No. is part of the Vin.

Which state or territory was it last registered in?

I know if you send a 'pretty please' letter to the N.S.W (R.M.S) with any details you have i.e Chassis/vin/rego/engine Number,

they will do their best to pass the letter onto the last known registered owner on your behalf.

It is then, of course, up to the recipient to respond if they wish.

Can anybody tell me if they have had success doing this with RMS (N.S.W.)? I asked a few years ago at my local office and got a blank look from the woman there. Theres a few vehicles I foolishly let go over the years and would be interested in seeing if they are still alive. I also have the original engines(all 308) and parts out of a HQ coupe and a HJ and HZ van I used to own, that the current owners might be interested in if I can locate

What about any other avenues to search?

    cheers
    Max

    Hi maxsandman,

I was chasing similar info around 10ish years ago. I actually spoke to someone through the inquiries line, (not sure if it was general or a specific section).

Knowing they would not give the info, I asked anyway...... well got to try! The girl laughed and suggested I do what I stated previously to do.

As it turned out I had the matter resolved before writing the letter to the (RTA) RMS.

I would forego the local and make enquiries through a section listed in the yellow pages or their website.
