It could be anything, but it's not going to have HJ gear from the dealer. It's over 40 years old, it's been through a lot in that time and could have had any number of "upgrades".

Absinthe is in my Dulon paint code book for 1974 and your tags are more reliable than the "expert" that told you it's wrong.

It never fails to amaze me how people grasp onto a crumb of information and build a story from it. Your ute is a late HQ and a lot of stuff like paint colours didn't follow models, they were just updated annually regardless of model.

My dad had an LH Torana that was 1974 and it was Absinthe and I'll bet we have someone on here with a HQ van or ute in Absinthe as well.

Sounds like a nice ute, drive it and enjoy it and don't worry about things that don't matter.

Late HQ's could be had with HJ colours. I've got a final month HQ sedan in Jade Green Metallic. They have to test the colours out on something.
Well before the V2 Monaro went on sale we had a whole set of Commodore Executives in the new Monaro colours sent to us for Rental cars.

As Rob said, paint colours didn't necessarily change at model changes and if they did they were introduced before the new model was released..... sooo, late HQ could have "HJ" colours... there was a colour change midway through HJ which continued through HX.... HZ had two colour availability releases. HQ had several colour availability changes... from memory 4 rings a bell... early HQ, 2 x mid HQ and late HQ... I know of a few HQ's that were Absinth Yellow from the factory.
