HZ GTS (sports) wheel Horn Badge

Interesting one. I was just digging through my box of NOS stuff to get all my GTS gear together for my HZ GTS. So I can get rid of some of the bits I don't need.

I thought its worth posting on here as obviously its relevant to the HZ Sandman sports wheel.

On the right is the original or what I believe to be the original HZ GTS horn cap. From my HZ GTS. The other (correct part number) is a NOS one I brought a while back. Notice the badge is different. The NOS one I believe to be the updated style?

Looks like we may need to remake the badge as the second hand one I have as can be seen has gone quite yellow in the resin.

Any interest if we redo it? I know I have been asked before. But I think we will put it on the to do list now.

The lion emblen with no bottom section is the one normally fitted to VH Commodore & Camira horn steering wheel centres.

Either someone has swapped the centre emblem or Holden themselves fitted them to replacement parts during the 80s, hoping that nobody would notice.

The part no. of the original HZ/WB assembly was 9947946, what is the number of your NOS item.

It was an option on the WB as far as im aware.

The WB sandman would have came standard with it ;)

Yes, the sports steering wheel was factory option NK5 for the WB.

Strangely even though it was standard equipment for HQ-HZ GTS, SS & Sandman, it was not available as NK5 for those model series. Any non GTS, SS or Sandman wheel with a sports steering wheel was fitted after it left the factory, often by the dealer like my BO6.

I find the badge change quite strange. The lion with no bottom didn't appear until 1981 or 82, so was not seen in any HZ or early WB.

When GM-H change a part in any way, no matter how minor they usually give it a supersession part number.

They were going thru a bit of an upheaval in those days, so anything is possible, but it could be that someone in spares just swapped the insert for their VH or whatever, because they liked it better.

Most likely the manufacturer was the same for all the caps and inserts and decided to roll two part numbers into the later one.GMH didn't always check 100% on deliveries and the manufacturer could have just bumped it through. As Dr Terry mentions they often made a supersession, but for smaller items with minor changes they just accepted the changes if recommended by the supplier.. Don't forget that the once the parts became spares and total supply went to Dandenong (HSPO) they had their own buyers and quality department. There were many factors in place that saw many H series parts suppliers changed, parts deleted and then reinstated a couple of years later. An upheaval was more than just a bit, it was substantial.
