If you get a quadrajet you can run the standard air cleaner. Was standard set up on blue 253
Any extractors are going to work.
I like 2" twin system with a single two in two out glass pack muffler but there are many options. Just make sure you have the pipes joined somewhere to get a decent note.

You don't need one with a single muffler and that will give a deeper note as well.

One of my Toranas has a 253 with a 350 Holley and a set of Pacemaker extractors with a 1 1/4" primary pipe. I bought them to fit on my blown motor but it has 4 into 1's and I like the way they work, so I threw them on the other Torana with a 2" system I built from pipes I had laying around.
They sound pretty good, but I don't have a balance tube and they do drone a bit (but I don't mind that).

253's respond well to a bit of head porting, extractors and a small 4 barrel carby (like a 600 Holley), and a good ignition.
Vans.... This is the 2nd time round the block, 40 years later! talk about turning back the clock!

I like the note of your WB James. That's a 2 in 2 out system yes?

I asked the same question here a few years ago and fitted my exhaust based on the most popular answer. Extractors, 2 inch twin pipes ( I put stainless) no balancer and 2 lucky glass mufflers. I have a 465 four barrel Holley carb. I couldn't be happier with the sound and like all 253's it will do 0-100 in a little under 48 hours but sounds cool while its getting there.

A standard air cleaner can be adapted, I did mine, but its not pretty looking on the inside/underside. Just selectively reshaped the base plate with a lump hammer and dollies being careful not to get circle at top of carb out of shape. I did this on a 308, so its a 4 barrel cleaner I'm talking about.
