    Originals were all coloured in my experience. You can see the original one in my HJ Premier here, with factory rough as guts overspray on the yoke:

    Parts were color coded as an assy aid / error detection. Different lengths and different uni joints were colour coded so the operator could pick the right tailshaft for a any model / engine / transmission combination by choosing the correct colour. Audit Inspectors then only needed to confirm the color was correct. I remember there was thin and thick walled as well but this may have been cost reduction or weight reduction improvements not due to additional torque, so this would not necessarily have been factored in. I came in around VC Commodore and was in the engine plant so this is mostly memory from hearsay and would hardly stand up in court.
