blue tailshaft? honestly. Ive never pulled apart a factory car with a blue tailshaft. Happy to be proven wrong.... My HZ Sandman ute was fairly original. Original motor and (manual) trans, diff. It was black.

My HJ ute has a blue tailshaft beneath all the dirt and oil stains. Factory 253/3-speed, so blue sounds right I guess.

You didn't specify van. GMH called it dark blue for the following tailshaft (out of HQ parts catalogue, but part number is the same for all):

HQ 253/308 ute, van, statesman, wagon
HJ-WB 253 ute, van, statesman wagon.
HJ-WB 308 manual ute, van, wagon.
    HZ-WB Statesman with M38 transmission.
HQ-WB 6cyl ute/van with heavy duty diff option.

WB Statesman with trimatic should be the same but it has a different part number and is listed as black.

For some reason WB 6cyl ute or van is also listed as dark blue despite it being different and a different part number?

was it the whole tailshaft or just a dot on the tailshaft? Ive wrecked many many many hq-wb's and as said never noticed it....
