Yep. They were there to stop all those nasty sharp objects in the back from coming straight through the seat and skewering you when you applied the fantastic brakes. (They'd need to make them out of carbon fibre these days with the brakes we have now!)
Vans.... This is the 2nd time round the block, 40 years later! talk about turning back the clock!
Yes and they are painted a creamy colour, to match the back. We have painted the backboards for our green van, black as the white looked stark, but all our other vans have the correct colour. Below is a pic of our Red van before we restored it, (shed find in 2010)
