    New tailgate.....

I just bit the bullet and ordered a new lower tailgate from Rare Spares. Phase 1 of the respray will start soon after. I hope the tailgate lives up to expectations as far as quality and fit goes.

I've never changed all the inside locking bits over before, is there anything that's difficult or tricky I need to know before starting?

All depends on how big your fingers are,the little clips that hold the rods on can give a bit of trouble, did you buy an original tailgate or the cheaper one ? I bought an original second hand one and also have an aftermarket one and the aftermarket one doesn't seal at the bottom, seems to have a big gap

I got the one that's sold as "original thickness". It better not have any gaps!

I've heard of ones sold on ebay that don't fit well, but was told these ones were good.

that's BS. I have used the cheapies and they fit fine. I just fit a rares 'original thickness' and i am satisfied with gaps. They came much worse from factory!!!

Very radical paint.... White with DY2. It's on historic rego, so has to be fairly standard(ish) in appearance. Otherwise I'd be going the mural route.

And Vombil, that's encouraging about the tailgates. I've heard all sorts of horror stories about poor fitment, but always suspected the van or ute in question may have had a rear-ender and that was the cause of the poor fit in a lot of cases. Plus we can't rule out "operator error" in some cases!
    Thanks for the input mate.

Tailgate arrived today via courier. Strong cardboard box and heaps of bubble wrap (I was worried!...but needlessly so.) and what a great looking tailgate it is! Looks and feels just like what you would have got from Holden back in the day. Straight as a die and appears well built.

Thank you Rare Spares.... You cop a bit of crap now and again for certain things, but this tailgate is a beaut. I'm thinking about buying another as a spare now while they are still available.

Now I just need 2 good doors and I can start the ball rolling....

One more question... After I cut the pieces out to fit the van, do I need to weld the seam or is it just a file-finish deal?

My lower tailgate from Rare Spares is absolute crap.
It fits in ok at the sides, but you can stick your fingers through the gap in the centre on the bottom. Have spoken to another vanner and he had the same issue with his.
Now this is "SUPPOSED" to be the thick one.
Rares told me that "My van must be the problem" rubbish. I've sat another original tailgate on it and there were no drama's with that one.
