    Front suspension swing arm bolt torque settings

    Hi all, I've rebuilt the front suspension (upper/lower swing arms) on a WB panel van, and I'm at the point of reassembly but I can't find the torque settings for the following:
    upper inner chassis mounting bolts
    lower inner chassis mounting bolts
    upper and lower ball joints
    Caliper mounting bolts
    Steering rack to Hub mounting bolts
    Steering box to chassis mounting bolts
    sway bar mounting to the lower swing arm
    sway bar mounting to the chassis.
    I know it a list, but is anyone able to provide this.

    Try in your workshop manual under 'front suspension'.
    Should be torque settings along with the bolt sizes.

    The answer to all is Tight, but I understand you want the correct numbers.

    I have a WB workshop manual in the shed with all my others, so I'll have a look tomorrow for you.

    Thanks in anticipation.
    I have the "Statesman and Holden WB Series - service manual supplement" but it has no torque numbers in the front suspension section.

    There should be a section somewhere in there with all the torque settings. Have a look in the general section or in the back.

    problem averted - I've purchased the CD-ROM "Parts and Assembly Manual" from www.aclub.com - it arrived today.

    Interesting thread. Another non electronic source is your local library. Its easy to forget these for workshop manuals, but they will often be available on order (but sometimes takes a few days) your State does own a lendable WB workshop manual somewhere, (many copies most likely) even where you are out of area it may be available to be sent to your local state library in a few days. This is really useful. Generally most makes and models are available.

    Its an easy forgotten technique not to bring the control arm (wishbones upper and lower) pivot bushes to torque untill the car is sitting level on the ground. Run the nuts up, finger tight is ok, (ball joints and spring unit safely re-assembled of course) and then let the car settle before tightening the bolts against the bushes. You dont want to tighten it when the suspension is fully dropped (hanging). Doing so clamps all four of your control arm bushes at that extended point, which is not where they want to sit once the car is on the ground. They then twist immediately, and will tear at some point, sometimes even as you put the car on the ground.

    thanks for the comments on this thread. SLR_dave - your last comment makes perfect sense, and to be honest I believe I would have talked - torqued up with the car on the jacks. Potential problem averted.
