I am off to Brisbane tomorrow to have a look at a HJ one tonner. Mostly concerned about rust. I know the floor plans and cowl rust out. Is there any other spots where they commonly rust? Any other issues I need to be aware of?

The one I had cracked chassis behind the front wheel and cracked a diff housing
mate they rust EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!!!!!! the only places you dont have to worry about are the middles of each panel! every edge and every corner could be hiding bog/rust

They spent a lot of time outside being work horses bring a fridge magnet with you
Cowl into firewall which as you say kills the floors. Door pillars under the bottom hinge, inside and out. Panel under the rear window (look from inside too). Lead joint rear top corner of doors essentially as the roof gets into the gutter. Sills. If it has rust in these areas it probably has it in others. The chassis brace on these where the front of the tray sits rusts bad where it welds to the chassis but easily fixed if not too bad.
As Beachy says check the chassis for cracks, but that goes for all HQ-HZ. Check at welds where lower control arms rear mount welds to the rails. crack spot is bottom and side welds at the back. Also look for cracks where the "shock tower" welds to the rail.
i went to sell a sedan chassis to a bloke recently. never even thought to check it and as I was unloading I realised
a. it wasn't HZ RTS as I'd advertised - someone had re-stamped it with correct HZ number - it was earlier
b. it has a seriously large crack where HK mentioned at rear of lower control arm mount on RH side
these old stink pots are hiding some dark secrets

hahahah! chassis was scrapped.
ute... well i've got a good painter who has access to a good booth but it's in bumf$5k Byford which is too far away for me to feel comfortable that I can keep an eye on it
So much for my panel beater...I've done 4 full days on nose cone, beaver, under bonnet and rear of cab window since he claimed it was 'ready for paint'
Going to see a painter in Malaga tomorrow. arrrhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
