not a ride but a project anyway

    Hi all,

been a while... picked up a rolled Track Topaz caravan and am rebuilding it. been putting off starting on the Sandman as it has been many years since I have worked on a car and was worried my panelbeating skills may not be what they used to be so as the caravan is made of steel and aluminium sheet panels I could ease back into beating on all the bent panels. Turns out I have been hesitant for no reason.....

This is how I got it...

One of the axle stubs is bent so I had to get a new axle from Track, after sending the wrong one first up the correct axle turned up on Friday and I had some stands made to support the chassis while I removed the suspension and straightened the bent section and replaced the bent axle. Got her up on the stands and spent the rest of the weekend straightening more panels.

yeah had a few people say the same thing but it's actually not as bad as it looks. Would you believe it was a $106,000 caravan, I've spoken to the salesman at Track Trailers and he gave me the build specs and told me the sale price. It has a Wallas marine diesel oven with hot plates that has a retail price of $10,000... My jaw hit the ground with that one. I knew it had a Webasto diesel heater and HWS in it valued at around $3500 so it was a bargain.

been too bloody hot the last week or so to work on it after working in the sun all day... Hopefully it will cool down a bit soon and I can do some more...

Using the van as a shelf I see.... Looks like my shed with the Toranas buried under boxes and van bits.
Vans.... This is the 2nd time round the block, 40 years later! talk about turning back the clock!

Ditto! was just looking at that last pic, looks almost exactly like my second HX does atm, the bonnet is such a good wide flat shelf when the workshop gets fulll. I know its wrong, but sometimes I need the bench space!

    Ohhhhh!

I'd be scared Sh#tless to consider restoring anything that was 106 grand new. Like.... a Sandman was 5, 6, 7 grand new and it costs about 30 or 40 grand to restore it now.

You are a brave man indeed! I'm assuming you're not married either.
