Nothing wrong with a 253. I just reckon you are mad spending big bucks making a 292 when for the same money or less you could build a 350 out of a 304/308. Or spend bugger all in comparison building a 308.

253's are a great motor, nothing at all wrong with them. If I had to spend a bit of money to rebuild it completely though, I would just fit an LS1. Easy.
"Proud To Be An Old Fart".
^^Agree, that or an injected 304/350 out of a VN-VSII.
I heavily worked a 253 in the 90s as a project (I worked in a machine shop). I liked it because it is almost square so if balanced and blueprinted they would rev like hell. Got great horsepower out of it back then. We could only test them against other cars, no dyno's. I beat and scared the crap out of more than a couple of brock commodores in my torana. I also built up a 202 that put most standard V8's to shame. Now days as above injected all the way.
Personally using a LS1 is not my cup of tea. Would rather listen to a Holden V8's unique crackle. It's a shame they dropped the development of the Holden V8.
I find a 253 worked to the eye balls much more interesting. A worked 308 is a great thing too! A fuel injected 5 Litre is even better. A LS1, that's just rolling over to the dark side.
I'm still considering an LS1 for the HK 307 GTS i'm working on. It is only about $5k for a fully Engineered and fabricated front crossmember with BMW rack and tubular A-arms with big brakes on it. This allows an LS1/2 to be slotted straight in with a rear hump sump. Stick on a Marks4WD flywheel and it replicates the back of a SBC, so Muncie and 12 bolt or 9" behind it. A good secondhand LS1 is about $2500 and will put out an easy 290kW with a simple tune. That is getting close to a real 400hp which i'd have to spend $10k or more to get reliably out of a carbied SBC and will use probably only 50% of the fuel to do it. So for the same sort of money after bits and Engineering I end up with a say 360hp HK GTS with big front brakes that easily gets 20+MPG and starts first go. Not a Chev engine I know, but at least was fitted to Chevs and Pontiacs and Monaros over here!

Same as it is in the real world, a GM Powertrain Engine. Built by GM for fitment to Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, Holden etc.
