help needed - temp gauge sender.

Hey guys... I need a little help with the correct temp gauge sender unit for my HZ Sandman van.

I originally purchased what was meant to be the correct sender from Rare Spares, but the temp gauge, at running temp, barely moved from the stopper. I took the van to my auto electrician mate who said that the gauge is reading perfectly between the ohms that it should be. I removed the sender and found that there was some movement in the unit around the black plastic bit, so figured it was faulty and went and bought another one. The new one gave the same result as the old one... at running temp, the gauge barely moved off the stopper... so I went through the old shit I've had sitting around for years and found a sender with a red plastic ring around it.... put it in and while the motor was still at running temp and the gauge went straight up to between quarter and half... I thought "awesome, problem solved", but I left the engine running for a while longer and checked the temp gauge.. it was sitting on the stopper.... can anyone please help me out with a part number or something from their HZ? I need to fix this ASAP. Thanks.

Double check your actual water temp with thermometer
And make sure the thermostat opens and the water is full
    Temperature should be around 80-85.
Sounds like the gauge is working but engine is running cool ( maybe no thermostat)

Thanks guys, yep, it's got a brand new thermostat fitted, which seems to be working perfectly, and cooling system is full. It really just seems to be the wrong sender unit... I'll try to find and fit VDO part # 320.003 tomorrow and let you know how it goes. Cheers for the response, much appreciated. Tim.

The 320 type numbers are VDO branded items. Any instrument or speedo repair place will recognise these numbers.

Thank you to everyone for your input. I found that VDO don't make part number 320.003 anymore, and apparently haven't done so since 2008. However, I was lucky enough to find an old stock one at Rare Spares. It had been there a looong time and the part number was correct even though it was labelled as a "temp warning light sender for XK -XC Falcon". I insisted on buying it even though the dude at RS insisted that it was wrong and was never going to work my gauge. Of course my temp gauge now works perfectly. Thanks to you guys for the correct info I needed to make an informed choice.
