The Vans that rocked cover photo

    DSC_1647.jpg

Thought this must have been a set up shot but it is apparently official GM. Interesting thing- apart from the obvious-the HJ in the photo has no full length roof lining.
    Pre- production maybe?

It may well be a HQ. Pilot or pre-production would often feature many things from the prior series. Look at the dash fascia on the HZ Sandman brochure.

All Belmont HQ and Holden HJ Sandman had body colour surrounds because that is what the base vehicle had. Only Kingswood Sandmans had bright surrounds.

I just found when the B47 headlining was added. It was fully signed off on 14/8/74 (the day I turned 7!) and was issued on 27/8/14. Expected cost was $4.52 per vehicle. So the very first few HJ Sandman vans probably didn't have B47 incorporated. Certauinly the publicity shot vans wouldn't. If you look closely at the red van on the HJ Sandman brochure it looks very weird in the headlining area. This is more than likely a Dandenong HJ first build so may well be the same van with a dodgied up headlining.

HJ brochure Gene, not the one above. In the photo there is no pinchweld but some weird looking headlining like it has been mocked up or even photo-painted.
