    Victorian Highway Patrol

Just watching Highway Patrol on telly, guy in Victoria just got fined for having an aftermarket shifter knob without the shifter pattern on it.

Never knew it was illegal not to have the shift pattern of the vehicle displayed..... So much for the redback spider knobs.

It's quite a silly thing to enforce. I got hit with it once here in qld. Strangely enough, the factory shifter was too ratty for roadworthy, but aftermarket one passed roady, and yet, I still copped a defect notice and a fine (a huge deal when you're on P-plates). IMO, its just another ridiculous revenue raising nit picky item.

A HQ had it on the console lid.

So if you put a HJ console in a HQ you need to fit a HJ shifter knob or risk a defect?! What a joke!

Back in about 1978 I had a particularly officious local Highway Patrol cop that used to take great delight in defecting my HK van every time he saw me.
I ended up having to go over the pits to have the van inspected and got 53 defects. One of those defects was for not having a glovebox light! I explained to the inspector that it was a Belmont van and they didn't have glovebox lights. His reply was that since I had a Premier glovebox lid, I needed to fit a light!
I also got a defect because my bonnet scoop was black and my van was Aquamarine Blue. This evidently was a contrasting, non-factory colour and it could scare horses. I asked him how the horses could possibly know whether a colour was factory or not, since there were many 2-tone cars on the road. All he did was just he just finding more stupid defects.
I ended up doing the biggest burnout out of the place, drove home and tore the yellow defect sticker off and never went back. Surprisingly I never heard anything more about it.

Ha,ha, they were obviously trying to drive you nut's. The police were such a delight to deal with in the 70's, alway's on the lookout for a victim. Glad those day's are over, they leave me alone now, except for the occasional breath test.

I have a spider gearknob. Love it. If I ever get a defect I'll replace it and change it back straight away.

HJ had the shifter pattern on the console lid also...... HX/HZ had the shifter pattern on the shifter knob.

yeah it's crap.... His reasoning was reverse gear is in different positions in different vehicles.
