A lot of old cars didn't have the pattern anywhere. The driver worked it out pretty quickly. It amazes me how stupid things like this can become a big deal. I have a Hurst handgrip (T-bar) shifter in my blown Torana with no pattern on it (of course). Nobody that has ever jumped in to drive it has asked me what gearbox it is, what the shift pattern is, or where reverse is. And none of them has had an issue with finding gears....

I guess this would be illegal then? You'd get a nice ring spanner imprint burnt into your palm on a hot summer day anyway!
