    Holden by design

    Did holden by design only do the commodore panelvans or did they do other stuff? There is a VY ute for sale in Darwin that has the plate but no canopy only a hard deck on the back.

    No such thing as a HBD Commodore Panel Van. The Ute's they are made from are simply called Holden and never been badged a Commodore or plated that way.
    While I understand they look the same/similar to the Commodore and even share parts. It's like calling a Monaro a Kingswood or V2 Monaro a Commodore.
    HBD did heaps of options to purchasers requirements and each option has a code that gets stamped on the HBD plate. The canopy option for instance is CAN.
    In a similar way to XX7 or XU3 it is a definitive way to know if it is a factory Sandman option.

    Yes I wasn't sure I thought someone might have removed the canopy. But it looks like it never had one. Options were

    S13
    SSP
    DHA
    BDL

    S13 = ?
    SSP = Stainless Steel Step Plates (inside the door openings)
    DHA = Satin Chrome Door Handles (interior kit)
    BDL = ?

    Your photo is not large enough to read.

    You could even option the 195kW engine in a VSIII ute or Statesman, the engine comes via the HBD process. I looked at a few V2's in yards before I bought mine and just because they had a rear spoiler on them they had a HBD plate. So anything optional done at the assembly plant or by Holden (as opposed to being done by the dealer like towbar) got a HBD plate. According to a few people I have spoken to by this timeframe (2000's) apart from stuff Holden wasn't capable of or was too time consuming just about all HBD stuff was done either at the end of the assembly line or off to one side.

    I think its great.
    Finally something that stays with the car that provides that sort of information.
    Holden have always been lacking in this department

    It was the secondary reason I didn't buy a V2 with anything HBD as I didn't want the tacked on HBD plate. The main reason was the rear spoiler on these is ugly as sin! Just me though, whilst GMH/Holden could have put more option information on their body plates, i'm not interested in a tacked on afterthought plate. Same reason i'll never get a car Engineered once mod plates come in.
