Having taken note of all the fantastic advise on front disc and caliper upgrades I have decided to ( for the time being) simply fit a new set of drilled and slotted discs and a good set of pads and new shoes and cylinders for the rear. total cost about $300. Also as already planed but not mentioned a new twin diaphragm booster and master cylinder.
Once again I am overwhelmed by the wealth of advise being offered so freely.
    Cheers Nathan.
    Revision!!!
After doing some research It would appear that drilled and slotted rotors in todays world of improved friction materials are no more than a fashion statement.
So the extra money for the fancy rotors will be added to the pad budget.

I wouldn't get offended Nathan as I don't think too many have fitted them. I'd think if someone had they would have said something. Brake upgrades (at least to bigger rotors and calipers) is something that in reality left our old busses behind as with decent pad material, discs, master and the linings you're fitting it will pull up (once) really well anyway - much better at resisting fade than four wheel discs of the era (though for repeated stops the four wheel discs did come out only marginally in front). 70's Holdens don't exactly share much in the way of cross compatibility with the US stuff like ford does with their XW-XC, so we can't just head down to our local Wilwood shop and say I'll take two of those, one of them, "aaaaand do you have those calipers in blaaaack?"... Although it can be done if you have the dollars.

There was a mob on ebay flogging upgrade rotor kits for around a grand but haven't seen them in a while (more to do with no time for ebay at the moment).
