Thread: At what point

    At what point

    Hi All,
After reading Hz restoration pages, it got me thinking "at what point" does a collectible or desirable car hit its peak and turn into a vintage car? If you had a T model Ford tucked away in the shed for the last 100 years for an investment you would be pretty disappointed I reckon. Sandman, Toranas, Monaros etc etc look great to us and we can all relate memories of our youth to them but when do they start to look like vintage cars to the next generations and the value and desirability drop out of them or will it? Or will they be the Hot Rods of the future generations as Hot Rods are to us now?

As you say a lot has to do with good time memories. The fact that the Van nationals is on an upward boom the visitors both old and new create new memories and desires. I look to the fact I'm heavily into FB/EK Holden's and have attended many Nationals. My son from basically birth has been involved with FB/EK's and now owns an EK and will be doing the FB/EK Nationals, so that's another generation. Will my grandson follow? I personally feel you're right about peaking though. Are we at the crest now? or is there a little more to go? A lot has to do with the economy and we have been riding high for a very long time. The arse has to fall out of it eventually and that time is always getting closer. When that happens the first things to go is toys and the price drops because the demand is less.

I think the arse has already dropped out of the muscle car market, GTHO's pulling $500,000 a couple of years ago are only getting $300,000 now. HK,T,G Monaro prices have dropped also, particularly non Bathurst models. There is still a market for them and plenty of people still want to collect them but they are not pulling the ridiculous prices of a few years ago.

I don't think the arse fell out of them,I recon they have come down to the prices that they should be,Remember it was only one or two cars that had history that got those prices.

Good point's, will our children and grand children follow? I know mine won't, as their partner's are into more modern vehicle's. I was lucky enough to grow up through the 60's and get my licence in the early 70's, and have two brother's in law that were both panel beater's, now retired. This allowed me to hang around panel shop's watching the now highly sought after Aussie muscle car's being repaired, when they were either new or a couple of year's old. This is where my love of Australian muscle began, and my love of van's and ute's came from attending show's of all sort's from the early 70's. Sadly it end's with me, my daughter's are just not interested. They love horsepower, but it come's from either a late model gen 3 twin turbo VZ ute, or a ford FG turbo XR6 ute with 500 horses at the wheel's. Their partner's like to build something different, and take them to powercruise events.

The proper premium performance models will always pull big $:

    HK-HQ GTS327/350 coupes
    HQ GTS350 sedan
    XU1
    L34
    A9X
    XR-XT GT
    XW-XY GT-HO
    XA RPO83
    VH E38 and E49 and earlier E55's.

The rest are the ones that will drop and have dropped off heaps already. Some of the lesser cars will retain value for various reasons, especially proper Survivor examples and there are those that will always remain popular like HK V8 GTS, XB-XC coupes etc. Early Holdens will always be popular, but the best ones remaining will rarely ever see the other side of $30k in today's money unless they are an exceptional car. HDT stuff will probably always have followers, but I can't see them seriously challenging the series production race car specials (1967-1972).

But there will always be good money in any Survivor or well restored Holdens, just look at what people will pay for nice HK's. If I found one i'd happily pay $25k for a really nice EH van.

Anyone remember the dark purple HQ 350 Coupe on Carsales for $79,000 or $89,000 recently? Two owners, originally some Holden managers car blah blah anyways I bumped into a guy whose mate bought it. Its coming to WA.... for the measly sum of $65,000. Just a smidge under the original ask ;/

Pumping 40-50k into a vehicle valued at 40-50k only makes sense for sentimental reasons.
There are vehicles valued in the millions that justify high price restos only because the cost of the work is a fraction of its real value . unfortunately I don't think anything other than special examples (ones with history) of aussie mussel will ever give a financial return. But then we are not in it for the money are we.
