Hj sandman van lovers - check this out

Hey guys - i moved to outback queensland a couple of years ago and brought my hx sandman ute with me to a small town - thinking the ute would be fairly unique. Whilst it has been the case i nearly fell over when i saw this van in a yard one day. It is an original XX7 HJ sandy. One owner - who sadly refuses to part with it. An older bloke - just cant move him on it although i have tried. We live a long way from the ocean so the dry air out here has preserved the car to a point despite the look in the photos. Aside from the missing rims, front left panel, bonnet and original steering wheel - its all there. I am not a mechanic or panel beater but I am sure it is saveable. what a shame its just going to rot away. I will continue to try and get it but hey its his and he can do what he like i guess. Thought the forum readers might like the photos though - just goes to show they are still out there somewhere and sometimes in the most unlikely of places!!!. quite a few photos to download so i hope this works.

    cheers mick h

Vandals attack it, it's been rusted here and there and weathered after years of neglect - but those decals are going nowhere

Are you able to get the ID tag info from it Mick?

mate the id tags are all there and in good nic - its such a shame really. I wrote down the details of the tags and have confirmed them all on this site. I did not take photos of them because they arent mine and he says he is going to keep it and do it up one day??

Man I'd love to get my mitts on that..... I'd have those windowless side panels cut out in no time and welded into my HX.

Bloody cow cockies, they are all always going to do it up one day no matter what vehicle it is sitting in their paddock...... and as the years go by the car slowly sinks into the earth.

If they were really going to do it up they wouldn't leave it out in the paddock under a fern tree. That engine ain't looking too healthy either.

yeah absinth i know what you mean = very frustrating to see it where it is. youare right about the side panels they are in really good nic as is the the upper and lower tailgate, roof etc - sure a little bit of rust here and there but even the handles and strutts are in surprisingly good working order. He's not a cow cocky just and old retired welder i believe. hey do you know if the odometers on the HJs only had five digits? the speedo on this van reads 01830 1 with the last "1" being in a different background colour and presumably the one that ticks over every 100 meters? My HX definitely has 6. any ideas? cheers

It's probably a 75 model. Early HJ Sandmans had a five digit speedo and later HJ had a six digit speedo, I believe it changed around November 75 but don't quote me on it. I have a couple of 5 and 6 digit HJ speedo's. All HX are 6 digit and have the blue high beam light in them.
