    Question Exhaust system HZ sandy

    Hi I want to install a new exhaust system on my HZ Sandman, I've been advised by a mate at work to go for a 2 1/2 Inch system, with some Lukey Resonators. Does this sound appropriate? Will it sound good? As I have no idea really, wanted some advice before I go ahead...Thanks

    What engine are you running? 253 won't need much bigger then 2inch duals. Can't go wrong with 2/1/2 inch duals, Lukeys sound good as well. Budget for extractors or headers as they make a difference too the note. Some people fit balance pipes most don't. I have a twin 3inch system with sports boxes and sounds awesome,

    Yeah its a 253 with extractors already fitted, my tail pipes are a bit rusty and think this is the perfect excuse for a complete new system. Already sounds pretty good, but awesome sounds better than "pretty good". Nice.

    Hi Mate, i only have the larger exhaust because i run a supercharged 308. Twin 3 inch is not an ideal exhaust for 253 engines. Just thought i should clarify my first answer to your question. Cheers.

    Personally i would go the twin 2 inch system with a 253 i had a twin 2/1/2 but it was a bit barky for my liking

    I asked the same question on this forum for my HZ 253 and ended up with extractors, twin 2 inch stainless pipes, no balancer and Lucky Glass mufflers. Sounds mean at low revs and gets loud after 3000 RPM. It does get too loud to hear the sterio after 90 kph (only 1100w amplifier) but I think that all vans do drum at speed? I just drive slower to enjoy the noise.

    A balance or X pipe will help reduce the drone at 2500 to 3000 rpm and also reduce noise output at higher rpm and Ive always thought ute and van twin systems sounded a bit off because they are usually diferent lengths because of the fuel tank. The X pipe seems to sort that out somewhat.
    As for power and noise reduction a single 2.5 with a couple of offset glass packs will feel snappier keep the neighbor's happy and still have a note.
    Its only my opinion but I prefer a single system.

    Talk to the dude on Ebay who sells replica systems for HQ-HZ. He reckons with the right style of mufflers you can get away with no crosspipe (like original sedan twin systems). He is very well priced too.

    I run a two inch twin with three inch tips. It only runs hot dogs but the balance bar keeps it quiet around town and it doesn't crackle. It certainly wakes the neighbours if you give it stick. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I like loud. I used to run straight throughs on the same system, with no resonators and it was polite enough to not be noticed, but had the desired note under the right foot.
    If you get too big, with no back pressure, you'll start damaging valves.

    Single 2 1/2" system on a very mild 308.
    Does the job and sounds ok.
    You need to put some thought into the tailpipe/s.
    Mine exits at an angle at the back corner (passengers side).
    If you drive around with the back open (like I do) you need to consider this.
