Without the downrated GVM as a discouragement I doubt most people would violently object to the addition of the console, GTS guards and dash. If the van was built on spec for dealer lots, I would imagine it didnt have those options unless it was a Sandman. HQ Kingswood utes on the other hand could of been common with the above options and not be a Sandman.

my point is with the fakers. pretty easy to fake one if you have a buckets manual v8 belmont built in 74. seen a few later models with 'sandman' specs that probably aren't, that's all. it's the doubt that creeps in. you're not going to pay a premium for a sandman if you can't prove it is one... after you've ticked all the boxes then you need to find if its original body. LOTS of question marks

There were plenty of holden ute's and van's that tradies ordered specifically for their intended use. Painter's, plumber's, tiler's..roof & floor. This is in the 70's way before the transit van became popular, as a former tradie I saw them in all configuration's. Back then none of us would have deamed that in 40 or so year's time anybody would be interested in old clapped out trade's vehicle's. We would have stored them away otherwise.

Vombil, that could be said for most sandmans that they could be easy to fake if this is the case! Should we discard every other ute or van that is not xx7 and say the doubt factor is too great! In saying that, I wish though that every other plant had come out with something along the lines of the xx7 on the tags to eliminate the doubt but how many are running around with those tags that started life as something else!? So surly there cant be too many fakes in hq Sandmans as you only have such a short tag life that they were produced with and the demand for them has not been around for years like your Monaro, Xu1, A9X etc etc.

Show pictures of the console mounting and floor shift hole and find evidence of blackout around the sills, beaver etc.
That's all that is needed to say 100% that this is a Sandman.

my point is that there will always be doubt when you are relying on a some mounts, hole and paint. I agree that the chances of fakes is not the same likelihood as monaros but geez i'd be hard pressed to do a ground up unless it had XX7, XU3, 18V trim on HX or a document history with pics and so on. i suppose it was a series of options rather than having a dedicated model code like monaro.

Move that reverse switch wiring too and get a photo showing just in front of the shifter hole. PLus at the back as mentiond above.

I'd be happier identifying a HQ than a HJ in some cases.
People being worried about not having option codes isn't new, most HQ SS and HQ XV4/XW8 owners are in the same boat. You jsut have to properly inspect that car yourself first.

At least they had the decency not to butcher the hole when they fitted the celica box
