    Wish list of factory options for the 1970's Sandman.

    After reading a portion of a thread the other day about what engine can fit into said bonnet space and what's legal to fit etc, it made me dream of a list of factory options that I wish had of been available because the equipment was there along with the technology.

    Curious to read other forum members points of view on this matter, I mean, some people might say we had more than enough available, who knows?

    So, with apologies to the purists here are my couple of thoughts on what should have been factory options on offer for those prepared to pay. lol.

    I think GMH should have had a Chevrolet engine choice on offer, I mean, they had done it before with other models and how many Chevy transplants have we all seen?

    I think it would have been a way to create another SKU to offer, for want of a better description dare I say sportier?

    Also, a 5 speed gearbox. Why? Well, why not lol.

    LT1 350 would have been nice, but by the time Sandman came around SBC's were lame ducks and one of the reasons why the 400 wasn't put into HJ was it was basically line ball with the HJ spec 308 performance wise and significantly lighter. We all know how badly the HX 308 suffered under ADR27A compared to the HJ 308, at least we still had decent fuel. The USA went to ULP circa '72 so imagine the HX 308 dropping back to 8.5:1 and you get a feeling how bad the run of the mill passenger 400 might have been. Probably the best we could have hoped for in 1974 would have been a 455 Pontiac engine.

    All the performance stuff that was available pre- pollution era.
    A big block would have been great, but since we never had them here I reckon a 350, Muncie Rock Crusher, 12 Bolt LSD would have been a cool drivetrain in a Van. Imagine walking into the Holden Dealer and ordering that!

    As far as the rest of the van goes, I would have ordered;

    GTS guards
    Statesman front
    Air conditioning (I wouldn't have ordered it then as a teenager, but now I've got it I don't want to live without it)
    14x8" front & 14x10" rear mags with BFG T/A50's
    Leather Statesman bucket seats
    Power windows

    That would be something Holden could have built with available parts and would have been a good move, since nearly everyone did most of that after buying one anyway.
    Vans.... This is the 2nd time round the block, 40 years later! talk about turning back the clock!

    White HZ Sanman ute. 308 4 speed. Taken it to HDT and got them to work their magic on it. No doubt it would have to sit in the shed for a couple of years before it could be done.
