And then there was one.... 440 six pack Hemi. Nothing came close!
In our case either a late 60's tune Corvette L71 tri-power 427 (the L88 had alloy heads on an iron block, a solid cam but a 4 barrel carby) or an LS7 (genuine Chev crate motor 454/4 bolt mains - but very heavy - would have needed stiffer front springs to support its weight) would have been gold. The mid 70's versions of these engines were choked down considerably by pollution gear (would hardly pull the skin off a rice pudding, except for the ZLX which continued to the late 70's with an iron block/alloy heads 12+:1 comp and a massive solid cam) but later on in the mid 80's the 454 scored fuel injection/hardened valve seats for ULP if I remember rightly.
These and a 12 bolt rear end. Turbo 400 was enough to handle them but as someone mentioned a 5 speed manual would have been nice. Problem is even now there are not many manual boxes that will live a long time behind some of these old torque monsters if used as they were designed to be.

There was one better, the ZL1 427 (alloy blocked 1969 L88) but lik ethe 1970 LT1 they were all gone by Sandman. There is only 2 x GM boxes you could fit behind a ZL1/L88 and those are TH400 or M22. Rest would be lunch!
A decent set of brakes to pull these high powered beasts up would be nice also.
"Proud To Be An Old Fart".
The ZL1 is a crate motor now.....albeit an anniversary model. At approx 30K, its an expensive all aluminum option
Also there is a cast iron block version at approx 15K
The ZZ454 is a better option in respect to hp/$......that said, crate motors are hit and miss at the best of times

I would have been happy with a rustproofing coating from factory,it would have solved a lot of problems 40 years on.
When you can buy all the supercharged goodness a new LSA offers for AU$11.5K + a couple of grand for a decent ECM to run it it makes the bigblocks look positively athsmatic. A well tuned LSA will paddle their bottoms in just about every way and still retain a beautiful smooth idle.
Sometimes I wish I did go that way....
