    Tags from Wrecks

    Thought it might be worth putting up the tag detail of any wrecks found for the benefit of HK1837, Mr Jones or others collecting data. Stuff thats running or regoed might be better PMed .
    Found this the other day - HQ Coupe utility, seat cap 3, DHQ74887S, 5/73 model 4750 lbs. Body 769366S, trim1863-39E, Paint 567-15330. Eng L20. Vin 8N80LCH769366Q. Nice old ute before an excavator ran over it.

    Any you find let me know. If you get the actual tags and don't want them i'll pay for postage to get them to me. HQ are easy to get off, just use the right size phillips head screwdriver and a hammer or lump of wood, rivets are gone in a few taps. HJ on just need the right size nail and a hammer, sometimes the nail will bend if you find a relucant rivet but they normally punch through with a few taps and wiggle the nail until the rivet head breaks off.

    Don't forget for Pagewood body plant cars up to mid 1978 to get the firewall number as well.

    1/8th drill bit in a battery drill.....Perfect to remove tags cleanly!

    Anything is cool. If they are something different i'll send them to a proper tag collector, I just want samples to try to detect fraudulent tags.

    Only problem is the rivet heads will spin and burn the tag.

    I find they normally do. Sometimes i've drilled in reverse to stop the bit catching the alloy of the rivet. Worst ones are the stainless rivets on VN on.

    i find the early big rivets harder to remove, as once they grab, they can tear the tag. I have found a combination of a 3 mm and a 15 mm drill bit is the best way, and get someone to put their palm on the tag to push it down and avoid spinning / tearing.. especially on the second rivet.

    ..if you get a wreck, practice taking them off as if they were extremely valuable. once torn or damaged is a huge loss.
