Insurance companies won't allow that imagine the money they would miss out on when a person owns two or more cars. It is the best idea though when you drive a car it is you who is covered not who owns it ,ie work , friend ,etc .that way you as a good driver will be rewarded over the years , not each vehicle regoed in your name for more than $ 500 each car( in nsw anyway) . Had a friend complain about rego in Vic for $600 i said how much for green slip he said what's that , $600 covers the lot for the year he near fell over when I said add another $5-600 for our( nsw) green slip ,and that was his hk 327 Monaro, so it was an old car, newer cars maybe cheaper.

It used to be like that in NSW up until about 20 years ago. The RTA rego back then included the CTP insurance which is now separate & we now call a green slip. A Blue slip is the inspection form for cars which are unregistered or come from interstate, I'm sure you have that too, but call it something else. A pink slip is our yearly rego inspection form, which I believe is unique to NSW, is that correct ? What does it cost to register a normal car (say an 8 year Commodore) in WA ? Is city vs country different, like it is in NSW. They burn us for cars over 10 years old, commercial vehicles & bigger engines (& weights ??) here too. To register say an HZ 308 One Tonner in Sydney owned by a company, you get the privilege of paying over $1400 including green slip insurance. Bargain !! Dr Terry

If my car passes it's pink slip it's exactly the same standard as a historically registered car. My driving history has far more relevance than the car I drive. I drive around 50000 km a year. If I got my WB out for two trips a year that is included in those kilometers. I am the risk. Not the car.
Not so. The more kms a car is driven & the more days it is on the road the higher the risk. Historic rego is worked out to be 2/7 of 'normal rego because on average it is only going to be on the road 2 days max. out of 7. The green slip component is also much lower for reasons mentioned above. It's like comprehensive insurance, if you're 21 years old & drive a VT SS to work every day, do 25,000 km per year & live in Liverpool in Sydney, the odds are that you will have a smash or have it stolen inside its 1st year. If, on the other hand you are 60 years old, retired, drive a Peugeot 206 5,000 km per year & live in Canberra, the odds are much, much lower of having any insurance claim. The cost of insurance policies reflect this risk. Dr Terry

HJ ute of same basic configuration is just over the $1K mark including CTP in Qld, plus there isn't the PITA of chasing up a pink slip each year. The onus is more on the user to ensure their vehicle complies, which is the way it should be IMHO.

To rego any car it goes on size over here on average is about $500 a year add an extra $80 if you own a 4WD
like i said DrTerry we have none of those slips here
if your car is unlicenced you just pay a fee off $120 for an inspection thats it

That old chestnut. Most people don't know the difference between a factory option, a genuine dealer-fitted accessory, an aftermarket dealer-fitted accessory, an aftermarket 3rd party-fitted accessory & so on. As you say, to many people if it was in the car when it drove out of the dealership when the car was new, it was factory-fitted option. The one that defies definition is the XU-1 Sprintmaster alloy wheel. These were not fitted on the production line & therefore not mentioned on the production broadcast sheet, but where on the cars when they arrived at the dealership. How come ?? Well it appears because they were a last minute thing, most were fitted at the transport holding yards & some even came in the boot for the dealer to fit, so is that a factory-fitted alloy wheel ? Yeah, I've got a few friends in Qld & rego up there is not much cheaper than NSW. Getting a green slip each year is not a PITA. Most workshops will treat regular customers kindly & it gets the slackers to actually fix their clunkers. Many of those are rust ridden heaps, with bald tyres & several lights out. If they didn't have annual inspections, the car fleet would be much worse than it is currently. What struck me recently was how harsh the roadworthy was in Qld. I got a friend a 6 year old Pajero thru an auction house in Sydney. It had 125,000 km on the clock & was a one owner in good shape with books & a good service history. We gave it the once over at work, it needed front pads & rotors, 2 tyres, 3 globes & a bit of minor stuff. This was a good late model clean car. They drove it around for 4 months or so & the owners got a transfer to Qld. It only had 2 months rego left, so they used that up & took it in for a roadworthy up there. They went to 3 places who wanted insane money to issue the roadworthy. One wanted all new suspension bushes front & rear @ around $3500, another one wanted to replace the front & rear brakes @ $2000 (remembering the front ones had only done around 8000 km). It all seemed a bit over the top to me. Is that normal up there ? Dr Terry

Like anywhere it can be a little bit of who you know and what you know.

I kind of think of the front suspension work as the " Roadworthy 2 step ", it seems to be an old chestnut up here, like I said, depends on who you know.

At the end of the day, he who owns the certificate book has the final say lol.
