The reason most vehicle's have little rust is because the area is in drought most of the time.

It is actually a combination of no salt, low humidity and not much dew. The cars out there do rust if leaves and water are allowed to accumulate either by open glass or in FE to HG utes behind the cab. There was a HQ ute driving around in my mate's town for over 10 years in bare steel and it was still shiny.
The gear selection issue matches the steering issue.

That would probably be close to true. You would be amazed at th condition of some of the old Holdens we pulled out of paddocks out around that area. Utes always had rusty floors but the panels were mint. I'm talking sometimes where the car had been outside sitting for so long we had to cut down a tree growing up through the ute bed. That particular FJ started with the fuel line jammed into a fuel tin and a battery, it had been sitting for well over 25 years.
Anyone else notice a small gear selection issue there...[/QUOTE]
HaHa, when i used to drive an old auto I wouldn't look at the gear indicator coz it was slightly out anyway, just feel the tranny selecting its stages

WHERE ARE YOU BHZ29069A!?!?!?
Yep not much rust but the chassis and suspension is always shot as I just found a wb I got has one spot of rust in footwell rivers side but chassis is cracked lhs top to bottom one inch holding it together and the roads out here haven't got any betterp
Depending on which part of Australia they lived in, generally dictates their condition. The coast is the rusty section, inland not so rusty. Then there's the real outback, or it used to be when I had a sandman, where the vehicle's are seldom driven on bitumen. Of course these vehicles are usually flogged out mechanically, but not rusted out.
