May also be assembly plant stuffup where the fitted the GTS's grille, and to some they just fitted the grille - to others they fitted the grille with top badge. Tha yellow van on the brochure and the Seawitch are the first two HZ vans from memory.

    B. the gmh paperwork is correct
    C. How they rolled out of the factory is correct .
    D. None of the above.

Are you sure when they say no emblem they don't mean no GTS emblem? They had a GTS grill didn't they?

I'll add my two bob's worth also. My 12/78 sandman ute ( I bought it new) had the badge in the top centre of the grille, exactly the same as the photo that Sean put up.
I don't really put too much faith in paper work or brochure's from the day. Same as the question about footwell light's being an identifying factor in the HZ sandman. They were never fitted in my ute. Hope this help's.

    Cheers.

Robbo has summed it up pretty well. Some stuff will and did vary. Tonneau cover as part of HZ Sandman is another example, lots of original paperwork says no but one or two pieces say yes, and yes is correct. You start to see the hassles I have in trying to get everything correct, you cannot rely for some information on one piece of information, often you can't rely on three pieces.
What will really help to solve this is a full HZ XU3 or XX7 production broadcast sheet. But then only for the one assembly plant.

The documents that are rarely or never wrong are broadcast sheets, features manuals and POA documents - but again you have to be careful as these documents were updated along the way and are only applicable at the time they were printed.

The unexplainable thing about Robbo's is the footwell lights, as at least until the end of GTS in 1979 there was no harness for quad headlamps without the wiring for footwell lamps. So the mind boggles on this one. Build sheet shows B1 for the harness.

It says delete Holden grille and emblem. Then adds black painted grille (or in some places GTS grille). It doesn't add another emblem. BUT some assembly plants may have pre-assembled their GTS grilles, where others didn't? Just thinking about what may have happened to explain the discrepency.

Yours is a Dandenong example. Red van is Pagewood. Brochure cars were Elizabeth. So it might be a good indicator Jennie.
