I have a gut instinct that the decision to paint clear all over everything in the HJ engine bays may have had an influence over the black coming back over the firewall. Maybe to make the shiny engine "pop" out at you with a drab background, instead of a beautiful orchid metallic firewall staring you in the face!

yes, bonnet hinge springs are black on HQ through to HZ.... Not sure about WB. A lot of people overlook them when restoring their car and finish them in zinc plate like the rest of the hinge.
