    Rear engine seal

Does the motor need to come out to replace the rear seal in a 253 or can it be changed by removing the gearbox?

Yeah.... You can do it in the car if it's a neoprene seal, but in the long run it's better to pull the motor and do it on a stand.
The hassles of doing it upside down laying on your back in the semi-dark with the blood running out of your arms causing pins and needles and then having the bloody thing still leak is not worth it. (yep, I've been there....)

If you pull the motor out you can freshen up a lot of other stuff as well like timing cover seal and gasket, maybe fit a new double row timing chain set or gear drive (or maybe a new cam and lifters!), plus you can give the motor a good clean and new paint job, paint the gearbox, crossmember, etc, etc...
Vans.... This is the 2nd time round the block, 40 years later! talk about turning back the clock!

There is a neo seal that can go in where a rope seal was. I think it is a V6 one. Have a look at aussiev8.com.au, I have seen it there.

I'm not sure that it is the rear seal yet. If it is then I don't think it got hurt last weekend, more like its spent most of the past 10 years that I know of siting on the workshop floor. All was good till I changed the oil. I'll find out Monday what the problem is. In the mean time it sits in a pool of blood like an old Triumph motor bike.
