Gas struts I feel are fine on a custom/mild custom but personally I don't like them on genuine restored Sandmans.
As for usability; the gas strut has it all over the mechanical version. So long as they are the correct pressure and mounted to allow proper opening.
They paint up nice also. Unlike the original units.

    What makes them crap?

I've had quite a few Holden vans and never had a problem with the original mechanical struts. Can't say the same for gas struts.... The gas struts on the bonnet of my Cruiser keep dropping the bonnet on my head at the moment and need replacing.

You must have pretty worn original struts then or the bolts are loose, mine never used to bounce up and down over bumps when open.

either that or you are going over some pretty big bumps!!!

When you call something crap, one assumes you have a problem with it.... So they are crap because they jump up and down when you go over bumps???
