    The 2.78 amd 3.08 centres are attached to the houisng differently to 3.36-3.9:1. The higher ratio centres use all studs but the 2.78/3.08 use bolts for the bottom holes. HZ should normally be 23 spline. It may have had a HQ-HJ diff put in it if it is 10 spline.

    I done a lot of towing towed a 21 foot caravan 1100km and towed a 21 foot boat about 70km every time I went to our holiday home

    You can bust a 9" being stupid too. My mate's HK GTS with 350 used to smash toploaders and 9" centres like they were going out of fashion, had to upgrade to a Muncie and an aftermarket 9" to stop it happening. But you still won't bust a Salisbury with a 202ci engine, especially an open centre. One of these in good nick will take a fair punishment. Yeah in a Commodore you'd easily break an LSD one behind a 308 manual being stupid, but you'd have to try really hard to bust one with a 202, unless the diff was 3/4 worn out in the first place!

    You can break any diff if you try hard enough. It's how much self control or mechanical sympathy you have. Or how much money you want to give to someone else.
    They managed to get a Salisbury to hang together for 1000km and win by 6 laps and set a lap record on the last lap at Mt Panorama in an A9X many years ago. That 308 was making some good power.
    If you want to break one you can. If you want it to last drive to its limits.

    And in 72 the xu1 won the race with a banjo that doesnt prove anything they wernt doing 6000 rpm launch with them

    Yes it does. If you use it with a bit sense it will last. If you use it for a purpose like drag racing with bigger horsepower it will break. It doesn't mean it's a weak diff. It means you expected too much of it.
    You could probably break a Cat 793 diff if you tried hard enough.

    Agree, easy to break especially an LSD one with a bigger engine. But not a 202. You might do it with an increased capacity 202 (ie a blown or turboed one), but you'd still be doing well. Most of the busted ones i've ever seen that weren't shagged when they let go were LSD examples.

    But in reality a fine tooth banjo will last just as well if your not stupid it's just going to be a show ute and no more towing and work. What's involved in changing it to a Salisbury

    Not much. Straight bolt in, just use a V8 tailshaft. Same brakes. You can leave your brakes on the car and just change the housing, axles and brake tubes and flexible hose. The V8 tailshaft would be from a HQ-WB ute, van, wagon or statesman with V8 3spd or 4spd or trimatic.

    They used Holden one tonner uni joints in 80 series Chamberlain tractors. They were absolutely bloody useless in this application. High torque loads and long constant revs destroyed them. When they let go they smashed off the hydraulic pump. However they last ok in a Holden one tonner even with a huge horsepower engine going down the drag strip.
