    HZ Van Restoration

    026.JPG
Hi guys, I am seeking a few opinions.
I own a 1979 HZ van that I am about to send for a bare metal repaint.
It is a factory build 4.2 manual 2 seater with GTS dash and twin headlight front - all but a Sandman but according to numbers isn't.
I would like to repaint in original factory colour (Flamenco Red) but also add the correct Sandman blackouts and stripes, plus front spoiler.
I will also add the correct GTS wheels.

Would any of you guys repaint it that way? I am trying to keep true to original Holden spec as much as I can, but hate aftermarket wheels etc.
    Any opinions appreciated.

It all sounds fine to me. OK, so it's not a Sandman but no reason you can't bring it up to spec and make a tribute Sandman that suits you.
You can get the look and even make it better without the risk of ruining a genuine Sandman. Personally I'd leave the Sandman name off it.

Its all about u mate ! You paint it as u like,, personaly painting it as a sandman is a killer idea to me! They just look so hot and the whole tribute car thing is respectable ! No one driving down the road is going to give a toss if its real or not their just going to say holly shit did u see that wild van!!!!! Good luck man!!

I like it. Good plan. I'd do the same myself. Just do it.

Nothing wrong with doing it up as a replica Sandman, most people on the street wouldn't know it wasn't one if done correctly.... It's your car, do what makes you happy.

Thanks for your input guys. It will be done correctly and I will keep otherwise as true to original as possible. Will post some pics along the way.

I spoke to a bloke the other day that ordered a new flamenco HZ 308 sandman van and was busy deleting options ie radio etc as it was so expensive at $8,000. He got it down to $7,300 drove it for 3-4 years and popped 80,000kms on the clock (drag strip also - pulled mid 13's) and sold it for $7,500.

There were no delete options on HZ Sandman apart from DL7 stripes. There were of course mechanical options (L31, LSD, economy rear axle, air, steer, superlift shocks) plus a few other assembly plant options like intermittent wipers and rubber bump strip on the front bar. Of course there is the optional GVW reduction. But I can't think of any other things you could delete from a HZ Sandman other than stripes.
