Thread: Vans cut into utes

    Vans cut into utes

    1-If you came across a sandman van that had been cut into a ute and was in good/very good condition would you buy it?
    2-What type of van cut into a ute would you consider worthy of you not passing it up or do you think they are just no longer authentic as a sandman if chopped?
    3-How much do you think they have been devalued buy once chopped?

    Look forward to hearing your opinions ,
    Seavan

    It devalues it a lot.
    If it was cheap you would buy it.
    It depends on your thoughts on re-shelling.
    You could put a fibreglass canopy on it and call it a panelvan. It works for HBD equipped utes.

    1. Price dependant.
    2. HQ 308. Still a Sandman, just been modified.
    3. To me a Sandman ute is more valuable than a van of the same spec. But a ute butchered into a van or van butchered into a ute has to be devalued relative to either body style by at least 30-40% compared to the original shape in the same condition.

    HK1837 when you say HQ 308 how do you pick the difference between a 253 or 308 off HQ tags? Does the M20 still stand for 253? It does on the hj x z tag info but does not mention how to pick the engine size combo on the tag break down for HQ Sandman Identification.

    2 as lomg as it is a sandman or 308 4 speed
    3 not worth anyware near the value of unchoppedvan (but you can always put a windowless roof cut back on)

    170 is 6cyl 270 is V8
    If it is a 270 (Factory V8) and the Tag ENG is blank this means standard V8 and thus a 253. If L31 it's a 308.
    M20 doesn't mean 253! M20 = 4 Speed Manual. It would M21 for a 308 with 4 Speed.

    Yep, M20 is the wide ratio 4-Speed box, M21 is the close ratio, which was the standard 4-Speed fitted to a 308.
    Vans.... This is the 2nd time round the block, 40 years later! talk about turning back the clock!

    the vin tag ... Skinny one starts with 8M70 (panelvan) or 8M80, 8N80 (ute) and then a letter... This letter designates the engine size.

    8M70D .... 173 6cyl engine

    8M70L .... 202 6cyl engine

    8M70R .... 253 V8 engine

    8M70T .... 308 V8 engine

    Yep that's another way. You will also note that the engine number will also follow that sequence.

    173H = QDXXXXXXX
    173L = QEXXXXXXX
    202H = QLXXXXXXX
    202L = QMXXXXXXX
    253H = QRXXXXXXX
    253L = QSXXXXXXX
    308H = QTXXXXXXX

    H = High Compression L= Low Compression engines.
