    202 t0 253/308

Hello all im in the process of deciding what engine to replace my red 202/m21 and banjo diff with. At the moment im naturally thinking of RED 253 or 308 as i would like some power and hopefully keep a little fuel economy. Any advice and appions in with this area would be great. I was also curious what parts i can salvage from my 202 drive line if just went to a 253 e.g. i currently have power steering could i use this with the v8 blocks? I hope you all had a great christmas thankyou again!

The only thing you can re-use is the power steering. You could change the aussie 4spd to a V8 box to by simply replacing the input shaft.

What series Holden do you have?

If you want economy an EFI 5litre and 4spd auto is the go.

Your power steering pump would require different brackets and possibly different hose lengths.
Your best bet is to buy a running car with the driveline you want, and swap it. Then you get to sell the doner car with your old running gear.

Hoses are the same, just the bracket differs but V8 power steering brackets and spacers are easy to find.

If was me i would go for a 253 plenty of power with a cam and carby package not so much in fuel cost and they are very economical better than a 202 any day
The only reason im saying use a 253 is i think your a young bloke so fuel cost matters well it did when i was young

As HK says, fuel injected 5 litre. Unreal engine with all modern advantages of fuel injection. Cheap to find these days too.
Plus you get away from the Aussie 4 speed. Nearly convincing myself to do it to my ute now.

Piece of cake bolt-in conversion too. It's a hard one to look past for simplicity and power/economy.
A mate of mine just sold his VT SS with all that running gear for $900.00!! A running, driving car that just ran out of rego!! Find a cheaper donor car than that. (and my missus wouldn't let me buy it because it would take up space in the yard!)

Not for long it wouldn't have.... motor and 'box straight into my van and then sell the rest for $900.00.
Vans.... This is the 2nd time round the block, 40 years later! talk about turning back the clock!

Plus the auto ones are cheaper, and these are what you want. There is a VQ Statesman parked on the grass near me, probably $500 would buy it.

Its a 1975 HJ kingswood Van, and i think i will keep to carby engine as i like the idea of that better i know the ecomeny will never match EFI engines lol but is there a good driveline combo i can get behind a 253 or 308 such as what gear box and diff? is there a good diff if a stuck with Aussie 4 speed? Whats a resonble amount of money to spend on a donor car? also if i did settle for the 253 in the rebuild process what parts would be worth upgrading to get a wee more power above the stock number.
