The stock diff should be fine if you are sensible driver
as for the 253 rebuild cam carby would be plenty if you start reco heads they can work out to be quite expensive

Depends on what you want to use it for. If it is an everyday driver a cheap and easy upgrade would be a 253, trimatic and a taller diff like a 3.08. If it is a car you don't use very often a 253 using your 4spd and a few more bits and pieces like gearbox input shaft, bellhousing etc. Either will bolt straight in with no mods, but you will need a new radiator, throttle cable, exhaust plus hoses, wiring etc either way. As Innuendo says best bet here would be to buy a whole car with the lot in it. This sort of thing, don't be scared of the price as there is money to be made back by selling off the car once you are done:

For 253 go blue motor. 4 barrel carb and electronic distributed is standard on these. A mild cam will help and not harm economy too much. Extractors too.
Aussie 4 speed(m20) is ok. Celica 5 speed would be ok if it came in the donner car. 3:08 Salisbury diff will be ideal if you are doing highway miles for economy. They are better with this diff all round in my opinion anyway.
Make sure you don't use a commodore engine as the cost of changing sump and ancillaries will not be worth it.

The best up grade for a 308 for more power is a chev....
A 17 litre V16 car makes 2700hp. Don't use much fuel either, only around 380 litres an hour when under full load.
I'd go the late model 304 V8 option. I started with a 308 out of a HX and the only thing that was useful was the rocker covers and intake. The block out of the HX was at 60 thou when we pulled the heads and it needed to be rebored and the heads where both cracked so I ended up with some expensive paper weights. The mate that is doing the engine said this was third early model 308 (pre-VN) that he had built this year that had needed a new block. The post VN stuff is 10 to 15 years younger and has less wear and tear when compared to the carby stuff.

Beat me too it
Yeah injected block and heads. Harrop carbi manifold, Cam to suit and electronic ignition. Even without a stroker kit you will make more power then a standard red 5ltr engine. You will have to change pick up and sump as well as deal with the chev bolt pattern block easy to get around Just costs more money. I have a 253 here with big valve heads, flat top 30 tho pistons four barell manifold and went real well. There is also a bloke near me with a worked 253 in a WB ute and 5 speed box built years ago that would give. 5 ltrs a hell of a run. So the option is up to you.
Hey RAEME what is the fuel consumption like on your 253? what gear box and diff do you have with it? Im thinking 253 at the moment just for overall cost and to keep to a comfortable level.
