I have seen that on a few Sydney assembled cars . I think the X is the series (HX) and R is for factory 253
Does the body number on the passenger side tag end in an 'S' ?
Just checked, yes it does.
Does this mean Sydney?

Normal for vehicles out of the Pagewood body plant.
The R fooled me for 15 years, I thought my 72 coupe was a factory 253, the last numbers were QR which is the 253 starting letters but it means Q for the model( HQ ) and R (right hand drive). I believe this was only on Sydney cars as they were the only ones doing the export vehicles .
This makes sense I suppose.

Nothing to do with export, just the way Pagewood did it. They were also the only assembly plant to track vehicles by a number stamped into the firewall. I still don't know though how they tracked bodies imported from body plants other than the Pagewood body plant as they didn't have a firewall number. Or how and where they painted the front panels for the imported bodies. Pagewood body plant painted the guards, bonnet and nose panel as separate pieces when the body was painted and baked, and the painted panels were sent to the assembly plant on conveyors but the imported bodies went straight into the assembly plant pre-painted but with no front panels (same as Elizabeth). So where and how did they paint the front panels?
