i can scan in the rochester date / application system if you guys don't have it

also somewhere i have the ww stromberg numbers which i got off the net

if your at a swap meet or in a blokes shed and you don't want to piss him off by looking up numbers a quick reference is:

704xxxx small primarys big secondaries 1965-70
704xxxx 'normal primarys and secondaries 1971-1976
    1705xxx 1976-1979
    1708xxx 1979 up

basically if you find any of the early ones 1965-70, the matching number dudes will probably give you good money for them on ebay etc.

    this may clear it up,
its probably better to talk 1708xxx carb than "604"

i find the 602,603,604 australian system confusing, as its not stamped on all
    what do we all think??

    Guys

On the Aussie Rochesters the even/odd auto/manual thing doesn't always work. For example 1/75 on HJ 308 (with canister) until the ADR27A stuff was added are all the same carby regardless of manual or auto 7045281. These also don't have a picking code on them as there was only 1 x specification carby it wasn't needed.

So for a HZ with a build date of 11/77 It should be something like:

    1705728x??

No, should be 17057294 and date codes (2707 through 3007 approx) assuming your engine date code is around a month before your cars build date.

Ah ok so the 2nd to last number is month? I assumed (read elsewhere maybe ebay) that the 2nd to last number was 8 = GMH. not right maybe?

The second to last number is normally 8 (meaning GMH). Some carbs don't have the 8 though like late HQ auto 350 and early HK 327, but most do. You also see the 8 code for GMH on late HQ 350 auto engine numbers on the end of the assembly plant stamp. Earlier stuff were H5 or H.
Don't worry too much about the date codes. I've seen them 6 months or more earlier than the car and engine.
In general for 308 carbs HT and HG are 702, HQ-HJ 704, HX-HZ (and ADR27A HJ) 1705. Most WB I've seen are also 1705.
